Sciatica – worse than back pain in Snohomish

Chiropractor Redmond WA Andy Marrone With Patient

Do you suffer from low back pain in Snohomish? Even worse, does it travel down one or both legs? Does it go below the knee? Is there a lack of sensation in one or both legs or feet? If so, you may be one of the millions of Americans that suffer from a condition known as Sciatica.

Sciatica is a serious low back condition that affects nerves going down your legs. When it flares up it can cause shooting pain, “electricity”, numbness or even weakness in one or both legs. It is due to pressure on a nerve that starts in the lower back and runs down the back of each leg. And of course, this nerve is called the Sciatic Nerve. Another important little-known fact is that there are actually several causes for sciatica. In fact, there is even a condition called “facet syndrome” that is often mistaken for sciatica.

The common causes for sciatica include a herniated disc, or bulged disc, piriformis syndrome, and bony impingement due to arthritis. Unfortunately, bony impingement is usually a surgical case. We can also rule in or out facet syndrome, which we also can help with.

The Medical Approach in Snohomish

The common medical approach ranges depending on the problem and severity. The first solution is often drugs. These include pain medications and muscle relaxers. Sadly, they only address the symptoms and not the actual cause. After that, your doctor may recommend physical therapy. While it is a good option, it sometimes doesn’t work by itself, although it’s great when paired with the right chiropractic treatment. If your condition persists, your doctor might send you for an injection. Like the meds, these injections only provide temporary relief and rob your body of precious calcium. Lastly, there are more invasive “nerve blocks” and surgery.

Our Approach

If you decide to visit our office for sciatica or related issues, the first thing we will do is sit down with you and talk. The purpose is to find out the severity of your problem, and how it limits your life. Specifically, how it affects your work, family, and playtime. Then we will perform a detailed examination to uncover the root cause of your suffering. If necessary, we will order any necessary imaging. If you already have x-rays or MRI’s we will request them. Either way, we will perform a thorough review. Once we’ve identified the cause, we will put a specific plan in place based on the type of impingement you suffer from. This includes the right specific chiropractic corrections, home exercises, specific traction, and enzyme nutrition. And of course, if you are a surgical candidate, we will provide you with an appropriate referral.

This combined approach has several advantages. First of all, it helps heal ALL of the involved tissues. Second, it helps your body digest absorb, and use vital nutrients essential to tissue repair. These tissues include bones, nerves, muscles (tendons), and ligaments. When you address the problem from all four angles, your chances of success go way up.
